Martha Bird

Interdisciplinary Artist based in Minneapolis

ABOUT

I am a Minneapolis-based interdisciplinary artist that specializes in sculptural basketry. I use basketry techniques as a starting point to create expansive conceptual forms that both carry forward the traditional craft and challenge its utilitarian assumptions. My sculpture investigates a path leading forward while simultaneously acting as a “vessel” that may hold pain, vulnerability, and potential. In this way, the work embodies lived experiences. My artwork explores memory, emotion, and resilience.

I grow and harvest my own specialty willow utilizing sustainable practices and am drawn specifically to spiral motifs. I am interested in the connections between the human body, the natural word, and the universe— all of which contain spirals.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Martha Bird was born in New York, and now works as a studio artist specializing in sculptural basketry in Minnesota (Twin Cities). Nationally and internationally known basketmakers have been her teachers, as this art medium is passed down from artisan to artisan. In addition, her education as an Holistic RN also weaves into her artistic practice.

Martha’s artwork has exhibited regionally and nationally, including in galleries and exhibitions across Minnesota and the US. She has toured her sculptural basketry with the National Basketry Organization in New Jersey, Washington, and Massachusetts.
