ABOUT

Melissa Benedek is a native New Yorker who grew up amongst the art scene in New York City.  She was introduced to art at an early age.  Her father owner an art gallery in SoHo, in downtown New York City and her mother was an Interior Designer who also curated art shows.  Given this combination, it was only natural that Melissa developed a true passion for art and design, as well as intimate understanding of how they influence and inspire us. Melissa went to the University of Hartford, CT where she received her BA.  She also studied at the Arts Students League and Parsons School of Design in New York City.  Following her studies she began ger career as a Buyer for women's jewelry and accessories.  After great success as a Buyer, she decided to start her own business.  Her love for color combinations, textures and design led her into becoming a Jewelry Designer.  She created her own jewelry designs and an array of collections of unique and desirable jewelry.  She had a following amongst celebrities and high-profile business women. Her direction today is based solely on her artwork.  She is a Contemporary Artist whose work is focused on Abstract Expressionism.  Her portfolio demonstrates her vision and passion for colors and textures.  She is guided by her intuition and considered an Intuitive painter.  Her art features an array of beautiful color combinations and fluid brushstrokes that intersect, overlap and react with one another.  She feels her artwork speaks a language  all its own, through color and movement.  Each color reacts to the next, until they unite into a wonderful rhythm.  This technique makes her pieces pop and come alive. Melissa has been featured in publications and has been hired to do many commissions, including a commission by an ABC News Anchor, in New York City.  She exhibits in numerous galleries and exhibitions, including The Hamptons Fine Art Fair.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I’m a Contemporary Artist from New York City.  My work is abstract and Intuitive.  I am led by my passion for unique color combinations that create abstract forms within visual space.  My process begins with colors that I'm drawn to, along with the music that fills my studio. I work with acrylics on canvas and sometimes mixed media, such as graphite and oil pastels.  I use my sensibilities to convey emotions that can be seen and felt by the viewer.  As I paint, I create a tapestry of color and affect. I believe that abstract art has no standard interpretation, therefore allowing the viewer the freedom to have their own thoughts and feelings about a piece of art.  I feel that the viewing of art is such a personal and unique experience.
