Patricia Dattoma

Artist based in New York, NY

ABOUT

Patricia Dattoma is a NYC based artist, art educator and lifelong New Yorker. Her abstract paintings are a visual response to her environment.  Using acrylic paint, & occasionally mixed media, Dattoma explores a sense of place and feeling through color, shape and texture. Her inspiration primarily comes from her life in NYC, where the seemingly chaotic sights & sounds of the city produce a rhythm and harmony that emerge abstractly onto her canvas. She also gets inspiration from the beaches of the West Coast and the desert landscape of the American Southwest. Dattoma received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Bernard M.Baruch College/CUNY and worked in the advertising industry for many years. However, she spent much of her free time taking evening art classes (painting, drawing & art history) from The School of Visual Arts/NYC. After a successful career with a major NYC advertising agency, she made the decision to pursue her lifelong love of teaching and visual art and enrolled in the School of Visual Arts/NYC Post Baccalaureate program for Art Education. She became a NYS certified public middle school art teacher within the NYC Department of Education. While teaching full time she earned her Masters Degree in Art Education from Teachers College/Columbia University. Now retired, Dattoma is a full time artist. She is most inspired by the works of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Georgia O’Keeffe and Eva Hesse. Dattoma’s work has been exhibited in NYC galleries and she has sold work to private collectors, both nationally & internationally. She resides in Manhattan with her husband, daughter & rescue pup.

ARTIST STATEMENT

As a lifelong New Yorker, I am surrounded by all types of sensory stimulation. I have come to realize through my creative practice that my environment informs my work, both consciously and subconsciously. Using acrylic paint, inks & occasionally mixed media, I explore a sense of place and feeling through color, shape and texture. My inspiration comes from my life in NYC, where the seemingly chaotic sights & sounds produce a rhythm and harmony that emerge abstractly onto my canvas. When I need a break from city life, I also get inspiration from the beaches of the West Coast and the desert landscape of the American Southwest. Through my work, which is primarily influenced by NYC, I try to find the beauty in the chaos. I use color to convey the feeling of excitement that the city has to offer. My process can be intuitive, while sometimes revealing representational glimpses of buildings, water towers, or desert formations, depending on my location. I have a great love for NYC, am continually inspired by it and always find something new here to inform my work.
