ARTIST STATEMENT
Richard currently feels Spaced Out and Blocked! His work explores the idea that he feels spaced out from technology. His paintings incorporate acrylic and spray paint, inks and stencils to achieve his view of space and its beauty. The paintings have the shapes and forms you may find from gazing up at the night sky; planets and perhaps stars and moons. His paintings are very textured and tactile, another nod to his personal block to technology. The textures are anything but digital. They are arguably now a traditional technique borrowed from the Expressionists of the mid-20th Century. Additionally, there is a subset of paintings in his latest series titled BLOCKED. These paintings feature grids. These grids are akin to fences. At first glance, these paintings are monochromatic. However, they appear monochromatic because underneath the solid color are layers and layers of pigment. These layers are similar to the walls and borders Richard ends up putting up as a response from feeling Blocked.
