ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a figurative oil painter but I am also a skilled watercolor artist, collage artist, muralist and draftsman. With a particular vision in mind I create work in whatever medium I think best communicates the theme of the piece. I create most of my work in oil painting. Firstly, because I was professionally trained in said medium but also because I love the viscosity of oil paint. Oil paint has a deep richness and a variety of textures that I feel best portrays skin, hair and nature. These themes often run throughout my work. I try to create a sense of contemplation in the subtle details of my paintings by using light, color and texture. I get a lot of inspiration from the woman in my life. Painting people you know has a ceremonial and meditational aspect that I greatly enjoy. Painting the human form allows me to create a mental space to contemplate the complexities of relationships to one another. At this time the figures in my work are predominately female. As a female artist I strive to reclaim the female gaze through depicting women in powerful yet graceful delicate poses. Woman are one of the most complex creatures on the planet so when painting I try to capture their nuances.
