Hi Evita! Tell me about your background and where your creative journey began.
As far as I could remember I wanted to be an artist, my parents told me that I used to draw on everything. I took classes all through high school and then majored in graphic design in college.
What led you to focus on collage as your primary medium for making art?
When I began my art practice, I started out painting in acrylic in the style of Impressionism, then one night I had a dream about an angel visiting me with a sketch book with sketches that looked like my current work.
Your collage work depicts women, men, and children in moments of joy during their everyday lives; conversing at the bus stop, immersed in flower fields, or wandering through a whimsical landscape. Where do you find inspiration for your work?
My inspiration comes from day to day experiences, people that I meet or have met, places that I have traveled and childhood memories.
How has your work shifted and evolved over time?
I first began painting Impressionism, then i went on to pastels and finally I found my current practice in mixed media collage.
Which art movements, or artists, have influenced your art practice?
I am greatly influenced by Romeare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, William Johnson and Cubism.
How has Instagram influenced your work as an artist?
Instagram has made a big impact on my artist career because of the national and international reach that this social media platform has. I have been contacted by people from all over the world, notable celebrities, television personalities and various others have contacted me to purchase my work.
What are your future goals and aspirations?
To work larger, 48” X 48” and above, to get into a blue chip gallery and to have a solo museum show.
