Mike Filan: The Power of Process

New York City-based painter Mike Filan is known for bold and expressive abstract paintings, reflective of his deep adoration for the creative process. Focusing on gesture, color, and form, Mike creates a unique visual language that invites the viewer to embark on their own journey of self-exploration. In this interview, Mike discusses the driving force behind his work.

How did your creative journey begin?

As a child, I was influenced by both my grandfathers they were both talented artists in their own right. On alternate Sundays, I would visit my grandfathers and I would either draw or do something related to either one of them. As a child in school, I was always painting drawing, and making sculpture art always was my center.

Where do you find inspiration for your work?

My inspiration comes from wanting to make paintings and then comes from the activity of making paintings and then coming from wanting to see the painting is complete. The whole activity of the painting process inspires me.

How has your work shifted and evolved?

This shift I would have to say is a higher sense of organized chaos, a greater sense of the intention of space, organizing of space in color, and the control of the chaos.

What does a typical day in the studio look like for you, and how has your art practice grown or changed?

My process is that in my brain I begin to create paintings of a period then I go to Home Depot and choose colors and paint, and then bring them to the studio. Then I paint with a large amount of energy and activity, and then I take a break and then the process begins again.

Which experiences have impacted your work as an artist?

Museum experiences and certain ways in which other artists have worked resonated with me. Gallery visits, studio visits, and for the most part day-to-day life experiences impact my work as an artist.

How has Instagram impacted your art career?

Instagram allows for a broader impact. I can see other artists' work and they can see my work - including galleries, curators, and art dealers. This allows for an easy way to show your work to others.

What are your future goals and aspirations?

To continue to be able to create new work, to continue to grow as an artist, and show my work to new audiences.
